Having scalable and elastic IoT solutions that allow cost reduction and are capable of processing, managing, and analyzing an ever-growing amount of data is essential for companies that want to remain competitive in the market. With this in mind, La Marzocco, a global leader in high-end coffee machines, entrusted Omnys and AWS to develop a cutting-edge cloud-based IoT solution tailored to its needs.
Client
Founded in 1927 in Florence, in 1939 La Marzocco revolutionized the world of coffee machines by developing the first machine with a horizontal steam boiler. With a turnover of over 210 million euros and around 800 employees, it is now the world leader in the production of high-end professional coffee machines.
Challenge
Seeking the most advanced technology to offer the best possible customer experience, the company launched a pioneering project in 2016 to connect coffee machines with an IoT solution in order to receive useful data for optimizing service and offering innovative solutions through an app used by customers. In the following years, La Marzocco also developed a cloud data lake to perform business intelligence activities on various business processes.
Given the large and continuously growing amount of data, the client now needed an IoT solution that was more elastic, scalable, and capable of reducing management costs.
Solutions and Services Used
While the data lake and BI dashboards were already well-established across various business processes, it was only at the end of 2022 that the company, with the support of Omnys, decided to replace the previous IoT platform, which was based on a very expensive and inflexible SaaS solution, with a new cloud-based solution built on AWS services, which immediately showed better results than the previous one.
Thanks to Omnys' expertise, based on AWS technologies and the Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) standard, the company was able to migrate all connected machines to the new IoT platform smoothly and within a few days.
Among the AWS services used, the data lake had already been implemented with Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), along with Amazon QuickSight for BI functionalities. The serverless infrastructure, which ensures the reception and management of data from the machines, relied on Amazon Athena and Amazon Timestream, as well as the AWS IoT Core platform.
Results Achieved
"The benefits we have seen are on several fronts. Security and reliability have increased and are no longer a problem for us to solve internally; in the past six months, there has been no data issue or machine downtime. Performance has increased tenfold, allowing us to greatly improve the customer experience for users of our applications (both technicians and end users)" Alessandro Alesio - Business Data Analyst, La Marzocco
La Marzocco has also experienced a drastic reduction in the time it takes to update connected machines and a significant reduction in costs. Today, thanks to the support of Omnys and AWS services, the client manages around 100,000 connected machines worldwide with costs reduced by 8 times compared to the past and a more satisfying customer experience.
