DEGAS

A European research project on Global Computing

DEGAS (Design Environments for Global ApplicationS) is a European research project within the FET (Future and Emerging Technologies) key-action, and specifically within the Global Computing initiative.

The emerging wireless technologies make possible to tightly integrate computer resources into everyday objects to enhance their standard functionalities through inter-objects interactions.

The interaction between objects (such as mobile terminals) implies that future applications, designed and developed to be processed by these "smart" objects, must be compliant to work in a distributed environment. Hence, developers will need specific development tools for this kind of applications: i.e. global applications.

The objective of DEGAS was therefore to define and design a development environment for global applications based on a modelling language such as UML (Unified Modelling Language). Such a development environment should allow a developer of global applications to evaluate his applications from a qualitative and quantitative point of view, such as performance and security.

The role of OMNYS within the project was to develop one of the two planned case studies concerning the development of a pilot service about mobile entertainment. Such a service is a multi-player and interactive game, based upon multimedia messages involving GPRS and UMTS technologies.
